My father’s shop on the Reservation.

This is a picture of where it began for me, this is in Rosalie, Nebraska on the Omaha Indian Reservation in Northeast, Nebraska. Population – 90.

My father’s shop was a place for gatherings almost every weekend. It was my second home too, eagerly waiting for him to get off of work at Smith Standard out on highway 77 at get to the shop where I was waiting after school. This shop was a dirt floor, no heat shop that still look like this today, he had an old Pabst Blue Ribbon tin sign that he had mounted between the doors you can see where the white paint is showing.

What I learned in this building was about work and how hard work – works. Many life lessons that I didn’t know I was living through – were through my father in this tiny shed. All we wanted to do is spend time with each other, working on cars, mowers and anything else the Village needed from us to help with.

This is where my father handed me the first set of keys to a car that he bought for me – a 1975 Chevy Monte Carlo for $100.00. I remember being excited and ran over to the car with the keys to start it – the car wouldn’t start. I lifted the hood and sure enough – no engine. I remember us going up to Walthill to get a small block Chevy engine that I had to rebuild to put in the car. I was pretty mad that morning but thinking back – another valuable life lesson.

My father taught me how to treat everyone equally, always. We hauled all of the Village trash on most weekends with my mother for extra money too. I hope we’re giving the same value to folks in Lincoln that my father gave to everyone back here – home.
