Why Are Your Brakes So Noisy?

Have you ever pressed your car’s brake pedal and heard way more noise than you expected to hear? That’s not unusual at all and the type of noise you’re hearing may depend on why your brakes are making noise at all. A1 Automotive has some examples for you to help you to understand some of the reasons your brakes might be noisy.

Warped or Damaged Rotors

The rotors are a major part of your car’s braking system. If they’re damaged or warped out of shape, that means that they’re not making contact properly with the brake pads. That can mean that you hear some odd noises when you try to use your brakes. You may also feel some serious vibrations during the time that you have the brake pedal depressed.

Old or Worn Brake Pads

The other half of that equation, the brake pads, can also cause some noise. First, when they get too hot, brake pads can form a film on the outer surface called glazing. As that wears away on the rotors, you’ll hear it. Brake pads also have wear tabs built into them. These tabs are designed to make some noise against the rotors to prompt you to get your brakes checked and ultimately replace the worn brake pads.

Buildup or Debris in the Brakes

Your car’s brakes are right there on the wheels and they go through all kinds of stuff. Because of that, mud, dirt, leaves, and road debris can all get caught up in the wheels and in the brakes. You might hear a variety of noises as those items are eventually knocked out of your brakes.

Moisture on the Brake Parts

Something else that’s likely to make noise in your brakes is moisture. Whether you’ve let the car sit for a little while or there’s recently been rain, that moisture causes a degree of oxidation on your car’s brake surfaces. When you go to use your brakes again, they might be pretty noisy as they wear that oxidation off. If the problem is related to moisture, you’re unlikely to hear much noise after you’ve used the brakes a couple of times.
