Understanding The Filters In Your Vehicle

Did you know that a clogged air filter could cause a significant decrease in the performance of your vehicle? Not many drivers think about all the different filters spread throughout their vehicles. Four primary filters must be replaced frequently to prevent any loss in your vehicle’s performance. These are the oil filter, fuel filter, engine air, and cabin air filters. More often than not, drivers overlook these car parts and don’t even realize they suffer a performance loss. Bringing your vehicle to the right shop will ensure your vehicle is properly maintained and running at peak performance.

Oil Filter

Only needing a replacement for every other oil change, the oil filter is quintessential in keeping the engine clean and free from problems. It can achieve this goal by filtering out all the dirt, bugs, and other contaminants from the engine oil, that are naturally picked up while driving. If the filter becomes clogged or overfilled, debris can get into the engine and cause serious problems. The dirtier the oil, the less effective it is at removing excess heat from the engine, and dirty oil will lead to an overheating engine.

Fuel Filter

The fuel filter works the same as the oil filter, but for the fuel entering your engine from the gas tank. When we pump our gas into our cars, it is not clean and is actually riddled with dirt, water, and other contaminants. Be careful. If the fuel filter gets clogged, it will limit the amount of fuel that can enter the engine. Less fuel leads to misfires, decreased engine performance, and more problems down the road.

Engine Air Filter

Most combustion engines work off of the small combustion caused by a unique mixture of fuel and air. You need air to cause that combustion, and that is where the engine air filter comes into play. It keeps the air coming into your vehicle free of water, dust, and bugs which could cause issues if they got into the engine. Limiting the airflow due to a clogged filter ensures that your vehicle will suffer acceleration issues and performance and can reduce fuel economy.

Cabin Air Filter

Just as important as the air your vehicle breathes, the air we breathe must be clean. The cabin air filter, often mistakenly interchanged with the engine air filter, keeps bugs, water, and dirt from being blown into our faces when we turn on the AC system. The cabin air filter is often overlooked and sometimes never replaced. If not replaced frequently, you might experience weird smells, notice water coming from the vents, or experience reduced airflow.
