Ways To Avoid Distracted Driving

With every year that goes by, it seems distracted driving is becoming more and more of a problem. As cars and handheld devices get more and more sophisticated, they become more of a distraction as we travel to and from work or school. And age-old distractions like passengers and food or drink are as present as ever. With so many accidents and even deaths caused by distracted driving, the pros at A1 Automotive want you to know what to be on the lookout for.

Your Cell Phone

Your cell phone is likely the number one cause of distracted driving, as it is with most people. Even though states around the country have passed so-called “hands-free” laws that prohibit cell phone use while in the vehicle, you still see people using theirs in traffic on a daily basis. Our suggestion is to place your cell phone in the passenger seat or glove box before you depart, keeping it from being a distraction. No phone call or text message is worth a smashed car, injury, or death, so just leave your cell phone be while you drive.

Food & Drink

This one is as old as cars themselves. Everyone thinks they can handle a quick snack or drink while driving, but the minute you get ketchup on your shirt or spill coffee on your lap, your focus is anywhere but the road ahead. In a world of drive-thrus, it is mighty tempting to grab a quick snack, but our advice is to set aside that soda or burger until you reach your destination. You might be hungry, but you will arrive alive.

The Car Itself

Think about the car you were driving twenty years ago. Now think about the car you drive today. Chances are it has a lot more bells and whistles, and thus, more distractions. From the radio to the GPS to onboard entertainment, all those modern advances compete for your attention while you drive. Set your GPS before you leave the driveway, choose your music then as well. That way, when you are actually driving, you can ignore all those distractions.

At A1 Automotive in Lincoln, NE, we want everyone to make it safely to their destination. That’s why we recommend everyone avoid distracted driving. Don’t let a cell phone, GPS, or a burger be the cause of another distracted driving incident; when you are driving, concentrate fully on the road ahead.
